The brief

What is the future of cities as learning environments? What are the opportunities our common spaces could provide for education? Education is part of our everyday life, how do we maximize value?

The background

The concept of learning is facing transformation. Changes in the operating environment challenge the way we teach, our practices and our tools. To achieve the best learning outcomes we need to be up to date what is happening in the world since learning is the way we build the society of the future. It is important to understand the opportunities our city could provide for education to develop more meaningful learning experiences for children and citizens. The concept of learning environment has changed. Learning is not anymore bound to physical environment. It can be any place, situation or experience where you learn, e.g. museums, libraries, online, public transportation, nature, parks, etc. Cities are the future platforms for learning.

The problem

What could the concept of city as a learning environment mean? How do we perceive common space as learning environment, e.g. how a group of children or students could use common spaces as part of their everyday learning and be part of their curriculum. How could we utilize the opportunities provided by society to create more meaningful learning environments for education? Core stakeholder involved are children, families, teachers and other key city stakeholders. Could AR & VR provide value for education when utilizing common spaces as learning environment?
